Cook St. Helena announces expansion

In anticipation of Cook St. Helena’s 10-year anniversary on Nov. 9 and its eighth Bib Gourmand nod from the 2015 Michelin Guide, chef Jude Wilmoth is excited to announce his latest achievement: a new restaurant.
Along with wife Meagan Rounds, Wilmoth will open Cook Tavern, a modern American gastro pub. Cook Tavern will be located next door to the original Cook (in the former Armadillo’s Restaurant) on 1304 Main St., St. Helena and is slated to open this winter.

Rounds, whose previous hospitality background include working as chief concierge at the W in San Francisco and as executive assistant to chef Thomas Keller, will take on the restaurant’s administrative duties.
The building itself was constructed in 1891 and early construction has unearthed natural stone and brickwork that will become the backdrop to communal tables, banquettes and a zinc bar. Wilmoth envisions delicious small plates that pair well with cocktails, domestic, imported beers and microbrews, where friends and families can stop in after work and enjoy a true tavern atmosphere. Sample dishes include poutine with short rib gravy, fried mortadella sliders and “Sandabs and Fries,” their take on the British classic. Dishes will be priced from $8-$25.

Cook Tavern will be open late on Fridays and Saturdays and offer brunch on the weekends. “Growing up in St. Helena, I’ve always looked for that place — a comfortable hang out that’s not too fancy where people like to gather, eat and drink and have a good time watching their favorite team play,” explained Wilmoth.

“Meagan and I are very excited by the opportunity to offer something different than what we do at Cook. But what’s even more exciting is to have Cook Tavern located right next door. This makes it easier to manage a new place with our baby daughter Elyse in the picture,” he added.
